New Products Added to Section 232 Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum
Last week, the Trump administration added hundreds of HTS codes to the Sec. 232 list of 50% steel and aluminum tariffs. Among the impacted products are various forms of knives, as well as potentially others imported by ASA members. Click here to view the full list of HTS codes now included under Section 232.
As a reminder, the metal content is subject to these Section 232 tariffs, and the non-metal content is subject to IEEPA reciprocal tariffs. For more information on tariffs and how they are impacting the sportfishing industry, click the link below to visit ASA’s Trade and Commerce Hub.
California Restores Groundfishing Opportunities
After hearing concerns from ASA and the recreational fishing community, the California Fish and Game Commission adopted emergency groundfish regulation changes on August 14 that restore access for northern and central California anglers previously constrained by flawed quillback rockfish estimates. The new assessment results, which included fishery-independent data collected by CDFW, indicate that the Quillback rockfish off the California coast were never overfished.
The sportfishing industry applauds CDFW and the PFMC for acknowledging anglers’ concerns over questionable data, and we hope this may serve as an example for federal fisheries managers to prioritize funding for stock assessments for important recreational species.

USDA Grant Program Aims to Curb Invasive Catfish in Chesapeake
On August 7, the USDA released a plan to manage invasive catfish populations in the Chesapeake Bay. Secretary Rollins, alongside Congressman Andy Harris (R-MD), announced a $6 million grant program to support blue catfish processing for commercial seafood markets. Funding distributed through the grant will help businesses comply with inspection requirements, modernize their processing facilities and equipment, while also investing in new technology and worker training to expand the sale of invasive catfish on the seafood market.
