Mixed Results from ASMFC Annual Meeting

Fisheries managers convened last week in Dewey Beach, DE, for the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Annual Meeting, where decisions will have mixed impacts on the sportfishing industry.

While the Striped Bass Management Board made a resolute decision to maintain status quo rather than impose unnecessary new restrictions, the outcome of the Menhaden Management Board meeting undermined numerous sacrifices made by anglers to rebuild striped bass.

Last Chance to Comment on LA Menhaden Buffer Reductions

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has proposed reducing the half-mile buffer for commercial menhaden fishing in the Gulf to a quarter mile. This change of course, just a year after stakeholders compromised on the existing buffer, flies in the face of conservation priorities and the economic benefits provided by the recreational fishing industry.

Comments are due to the Commission no later than November 6. Make your voice heard today! Click the link below to tell the Commission to protect Louisiana’s nearshore habitat and world renown fisheries.

U.S. and China Announce One Year Trade Truce

Last week, President Trump and Chinese Leader Xi Jinping agreed to a one year pause in the ongoing trade and tariff disputes between the two countries. Full details of the proposed arrangement – which has not yet been officially implemented – were released over the weekend. Notably, the U.S. will reduce the 20% fentanyl-related tariffs on Chinese goods to 10% effective November 10.

Additionally, the U.S. will further extend the expiration of certain Section 301 tariff exclusions to November 10, 2026; previously set to expire November 29, 2025.

National Fish Habitat Board Submits Status Report for 2021-2025 to Congress

The National Fish Habitat (NFHP) Board submitted a Five-Year Status Report for the National Fish Habitat Partnership to Congress in October. The Report was prepared for the Senate Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee and House Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee.

Over the reporting period, NFHP supported 434 projects across 46 states, investing $27 million in federal funds that were matched by $93.6 million from non-federal sources and bolstered by an additional $50 million in leveraged resources.
