U.S. Makes Progress on Trade Deals with Asian Nations

Last week, President Trump announced reciprocal trade agreements and frameworks of agreements with Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. However, the deals only reduce existing country-specific IEEPA reciprocal tariff rates for certain products listed in Annex III (pg. 38). Existing IEEPA tariffs (20% on Vietnam, 19% on other three nations) and additional duties on all other products remain in effect for all four nations.

President Trump will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week to continue trade negotiations. ASA remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached that will provide some relief to our industry.

Senate Agriculture Committee Advances ASA Supported Legislation

Last week, the Senate Agriculture Committee voted to advance the bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act by an overwhelming majority. The bill, introduced by Senators Padilla (D-CA), Hickenlooper (D-CO), Curtis (R-UT) and Sheehy (R-MT), will restore forest health, increase resiliency to wildfires and increase the pace and scale of forest restoration projects – all of which have benefits for waterways and recreationally important fish species in the American west.

The House version of the Fix Our Forests Act passed earlier this year. Click the link below to read our joint letter in support.

Urge Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Commission to Maintain the Half Mile Buffer for Industrial Menhaden Fishing

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission is considering action to reduce the one-half mile shoreline buffer in place for the Gulf menhaden fishery down to one-quarter mile in most areas. If approved, this reduction would greenlight a 30% increase in industrial fishing access near the shoreline, threatening sportfish, forage fish, spawning and rearing habitat.

Click the link below to urge the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission to oppose changes to the existing buffer and protect economically and culturally important recreational fisheries.
