Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Packaging is a legislative framework currently enacted in five states—California, Colorado, Oregon, Maine, and Minnesota, with more states likely to follow. This policy shifts the responsibility for the “end of life” of product packaging from consumers to the brands themselves.
While EPR laws already govern various products such as paint, mattresses, and batteries, their application in the packaging sector in the US is set to transform business practices. EPR for packaging will drive the reduction of packaging and the adoption of sustainable, recyclable materials and ensure these materials are efficiently recycled after consumer use.
