Eastern waters are flooding. Western waters are nonexistent. And the mountains in between are covered in snow. Everything seems in order, then. Welcome to 2016. Almost.
As we begin a new calendar year, I urge you to take a step back and dismiss negativity. In a world of social media chatter, unusual weather and extreme politics, it’s easy to get caught up in the negative … unless you remember where you work. This industry, as we’re reminded year after year, is a special one. The food chain here—from manufacturers to distributors and retailers and media and finally the people on the water using products—is all focused on one thing: fishing.
And fishing, at its heart, is a good thing.
Fishing is fun. Fishing is family. Fishing is one of the best ways to escape the negativity of the world.
“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” – Henry David Thoreau
Behind our desks and countertops, we are all fishing for something. You, the retailer, are fishing for customers. The manufacturers and distributors are fishing for you. The media? We’re fishing for readers. Yet, at the end of the day—when clocks are punched and doors locked—we are all fishing together. We are sharing this world, our water, with one another.
Even in the rocky landscape outside of our industry, we can all use fishing to make the world a better place.
Here’s to a groundbreaking 2016. Here’s to tight lines, fair weather and following seas.
Happy New Year,
