On July 15, 2026, the 31 winners of the ICAST New Product Showcase were announced, recognizing the year’s most innovative products across a wide range of tackle categories. From freshwater and saltwater rods, reels and combos to electronics, terminal tackle, tackle management, apparel and accessories, each winner represented the best new ideas the recreational fishing industry has to offer.
While every category winner deserves recognition, every once in a while a product breaks beyond the walls of the Orange County Convention Center and becomes something much bigger than an ICAST award winner. It becomes a product that anglers immediately understand, retailers instantly want on their shelves, and even manufacturers suddenly can’t stop talking about.
At ICAST 2026, that product was the Rapala High-Capacity Line Remover.

Named the Best New Fishing Accessory, the High-Capacity Line Remover didn’t just win over the panel of judges—it won over the fishing public before the awards ceremony had even begun.
As members of the fishing media circulated the show floor during the first two days of ICAST, quick demonstration videos of the tool began appearing across social media. The concept was immediately relatable. Instead of introducing another lure, rod, or reel that required explanation, Rapala showcased a product that solved a problem every angler has experienced.
Removing old fishing line.
Whether replacing faded braid, changing monofilament before a new season, or respooling reels after a long year on the water, stripping line has always been one of fishing’s least glamorous chores. It’s messy, often frustrating, and usually ends with loose coils of line covering the floor before eventually making their way into the recycling bin.
The High-Capacity Line Remover changed that process into something quick, clean, and surprisingly satisfying to watch.

Long before ASA President Glenn Hughes and Vice President Of Communications And Strategy Mary Beth Long announced Rapala as the category winner during the New Product Showcase Industry Awards Reception, the product had already developed a buzz unlike almost anything else at the show.
The comments on social media arrived almost instantly.
“NEED!!!!!”
“Take my money.”
“When can I buy one?”
“Finally!”
For retailers paying attention, those four simple reactions told the entire story.
One of the most difficult challenges facing tackle dealers today is identifying which new products will actually move once they reach store shelves. Plenty of products receive attention during ICAST, but much of that excitement is confined to the industry itself. Retailers place pre-season orders months before consumers ever learn a product exists, making demand difficult to predict.
Occasionally, however, a product creates its own demand before it ever ships.
That’s exactly what happened with the High-Capacity Line Remover.
Following ICAST, Rapala posted an 18-second demonstration video to its own social media channels. The video spread rapidly throughout the fishing community, eclipsing four million views while generating thousands of comments and shares. Anglers tagged friends, asked local tackle shops when they would have inventory, and openly declared they planned to purchase one as soon as it became available.
From a retail perspective, that’s marketing money simply can’t buy.
Instead of convincing anglers they needed the product, the fishing community essentially did the selling for Rapala. The product demonstration was short, clear, and instantly understandable. Within seconds, viewers could picture themselves using it in their garage, tackle room, or on the deck of their boat.
That’s the hallmark of a successful accessory.

Unlike products that appeal only to bass anglers, fly fishermen, or offshore enthusiasts, the High-Capacity Line Remover crosses virtually every fishing category. Anyone who owns a spinning reel, baitcaster, conventional reel, or trolling reel eventually has to remove fishing line. That broad appeal gives independent retailers an opportunity to merchandise the tool throughout the store rather than limiting it to a single customer segment.
It also creates strong impulse-buy potential.
Positioned near the reel counter, line-spooling station, or checkout area, the product practically sells itself after a quick demonstration. Better yet, it complements another high-frequency retail purchase: fishing line. Every angler buying fresh line is a potential customer for a tool that makes the respooling process easier.
Those are the kinds of products dealers love.
ICAST has always been about celebrating innovation, but innovation doesn’t always have to involve advanced electronics, cutting-edge materials, or revolutionary lure designs. Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest ones—the products that solve an everyday problem so effectively that anglers wonder why no one thought of them sooner.
The Rapala High-Capacity Line Remover appears to be one of those products.

Whether its viral momentum ultimately translates into long-term sales remains to be seen, but the early indicators are difficult to ignore. It earned an ICAST award, generated millions of organic social media views, created immediate consumer demand, and gave retailers a product that requires almost no explanation once it’s demonstrated.
In today’s tackle marketplace, that’s about as close to a perfect product launch as a manufacturer can hope for.
