Becoming a market leader is necessary for the success and longevity of your business. Market leaders tend to be the ones who do it first and set the standard for which their competition will be measured by. They are not a one hit wonder, but are consistently leading the way. Before you can become a market leader you must make sure you and your business are ready for the role.
There are 6 basic tenants all businesses must ensure are in place before they attempt to take on the market leader’s position. After you identify what your market is, you are able to understand that every area, industry and group needs to be lead – you can then systematically go through this list.
Seeing Red
Market leaders are profitable and their businesses make a profit. As their businesses grow into the role of market leader, their profits will continue to grow. You cannot become the market leader if your business is failing and not making a profit. If you’re seeing red and not black then you need to address that problem before you take on the current market leader.
Remember Your Roots
As your company transitions into the role of the market leader, your customer base will grow and expand as more consumers become aware of you, and correctly assume you offer the latest and greatest products. As you gain customers you need to ensure that your core clientele, the ones who have been there since before your rise to the top, make sure they remain happy and with you. If a tree has its roots die, it dies – make sure your roots stay happy.
Learn From Their Success
While you are cultivating your business and preparing to become the new market leader, watch your competition. Identify who is the current market leader, and see what works for them. They inevitably will make mistakes, as will you – learn from how they still grow from their mistakes. Market leaders make lemonade from their lemons; learn how you can do the same. Someday you will be faced with the same problems they overcame; their ability to overcome problems will be your roadmap to success as well.
Go Left
One thing that every market leader is able to do is to innovate before others, see where the industry is going and get there first, and relatively safely. While everyone else is going to the right you need to be able to see that soon they will want to turn left. Being able to identify this is what being an innovator is all about.
Be Proactive
Seeing when to go left is only part of the equation. Being willing and daring enough to blaze the trail that others will soon be traveling down is the other part of the equation. We have all heard of the Bozeman Trail, and know John Bozeman blazed it. Mr. Bozeman was proactive; saw where people were heading, blazed a trail, and let others follow. It is a known fact that Bozeman used trails created by different Native Americans for his trail, but no one knows their names. Industry leaders learn from others and then sets the course.
Don’t Settle
The final step to becoming a market leader is maintaining that role as the leader. You have done what it takes to get there – don’t settle, maintain. Push the envelope every chance you get; this is what others expect from you. You will stumble, but your role as the leader will keep you from falling down. It will take less money and energy to maintain the leadership role than it will to get there.
