6 Things Hollywood Taught us About ICAST

Still recovering from an ICAST hangover? That’s okay. We are, too. And in our fast-food-fueled daze of fishing tackle and industry news, something snapped. The root cause? An allergy to overpriced trade show concessions.

To make heads or tails of it all, a few members of FTR’s ICAST crew sat down for a roundtable. The only rules? No concession stand food, and a requirement to sum up your musings in the form of a famous, Hollywood line. This is what came out.

Joe Sills, Digital Editor:

1. “Here’s looking at you, kid.” – Rick Blaine, “Casablanca” (1942)

Young talent is on the rise in the tackle industry. Manufacturers are increasingly investing in digital marketing managers and social media teams to spread the word about their products online. It looks like the emergence of a new cycle of movers and shakers in the industry.

2. “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” – Darth Vader, “Star Wars” (1977)

ASA President Mike Nussman says the industry has a lot of cause to celebrate: ICAST is growing, sales are trending up, and he wants to see dealers and manufacturers come together as a whole to build sportfishing’s future. But why was the Galactic Empire still using data tapes?

Nathan Benson, Videography Guru and Bass Industry Savant:

1. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” – Martin Brody, “Jaws” (1975)

Or a better one anyway. Of the past five overall Best of Show winners, three have been from the increasingly competitive boat category. No sharks were harmed in the filming of ICAST.

2. “Just one word. Are you listening? Plastics.” Mr. McGuire, “The Graduate” (1967)

From innovative soft baits like Live Target’s Hollow Body Sunfish and Patrick Sebile’s Pivot Frog to the scary realistic Hard Shrimp from Savage Gear, lures keep getting more lifelike every year.

Ken Duke, Managing Editor, wearer of Hawaiian shirts and floppy hats:

1. “Get busy livin’, or get busy dyin’.” – Andy Dufresne, “Shawshank Redemption” (1994)

You get out of ICAST (and most other things in life) what you put into it. I re-learn this every year at ICAST. I listen to lots of people complain about how this or that didn’t go as well as it should have for them, but it’s almost invariably their own fault. If they would work harder (and especially if they’d work smarter), they’d have a lot less to complain about.

2. “A man’s got to know his limitations.” – Dirty Harry Callahan, “Magnum Force” (1973)

There’s just too much to see, too many people to visit and too many things to do to accomplish in just two and a half days on the show floor. Every year I plan too much and accomplish less than I want to do. Next year will be different, though … right?

This year’s ICAST was the biggest ever, according to the ASA. In the coming weeks, FTR will be breaking down Best of Show winners, category trends and standout new products from the show. But for now, kick back and enjoy the roses.

Go ahead, Thursday is the new Friday. You’ve earned it.
