Saltwater angling is a brutal place for rods and reels. The environment does its best to corrode, oxidize, clog, and grind down your favorite setup, while the fish themselves will punish any weakness and destroy inferior gear. Making the best choice, especially when you’re on a budget, is extremely important not only in being more efficient and standing up to the conditions and the fish, but also in having the most fun. Constantly worrying about whether your rod and reel is going to be able to handle what you’re throwing at it really takes the enjoyment out of any trip, so it’s best to pick up a dedicated, specific saltwater rod, reel, or combo for the job. The good news is today’s saltwater tackle offers exceptional durability, strength, and efficiency at ever-decreasing prices—there is a remarkable amount of budget-friendly gear available today that was unheard of just a few years ago. And if you are stepping up to the very highest level of gear, there’s a whole host of new rods and reels available at that end, too—more than ever before.
Here, Fishing Tackle Retailer has highlighted some great saltwater rod, reel, and combo offerings from top-tier companies that run the gambit from very easy on the wallet to get an angler started, to the very best, most ultra-premium offering for the angler who makes no compromises.
Daiwa

On the reel side of the house, first up is the new saltwater-centric Coastal SV TW 150. This is a premium, oceanic grade baitcaster conceived for versatile inshore performance. The new ergonomic 100 size frame feels comfortable and secure in the hand, while the 150 capacity spool provides added line capacity. This is a true saltwater grade reel; the corrosion resistant ball bearings (CRBB) remain smooth trip after trip. Combine that with the high-strength brass gearing and all the angler needs to do at the end of the day is rinse it with freshwater and they’re good to go. The SV Spool and magnetic braking combine to absorb the surge when casting something like a popping cork, and as a result, prevent the reel from backlashing. MSRP: $279.99
Next up, the SEABORG G1800M-RJ is a power assisted reel designed for swordfish and serious deep drop anglers. This extremely powerful marvel sports a new MagMax-G motor that is almost two-times the size of the previous designs, resulting in a 170-percent increase in winding power. By adding nine large carbon drag washers, the reel boasts 110-pounds of max drag to tame beasts from the deep. A game-changing remote (Bluetooth) operation allows this reel to be run from a distance allowing anglers freedom to manage other lines or maneuver their vessel. Available in right-hand with manual 2.3:1 gear ratio when motor not in use. MSRP: $2,999.99
Finally, the SOL MQ LT has all of the hallmark and exclusive technologies from Daiwa in the form of an exceptional saltwater reel. At the epicenter is its one-piece, ZAION Monocoque body design. The reel body serves as a stiff and distortion-proof frame—no screws or side plates. This allows the size of the reel body to be reduced even while gear size is increased. With larger gears and a tighter seal comes more power and torque production, plus a reduction in corrosion. Internally, you’ll appreciate the liquid smooth operation of the A7075 aircraft grade aluminum Tough Digigear gearing system. Another standout feature is its 2BB supported Advanced Tournament Drag (ATD). With 2BB ATD, the reel’s AIRDRIVE sits atop the pair of BBs. The result is a smooth, nearly frictionless payout as the spool engages and rotates. With an EVA knob, the upsized, round handle is easy to grab, rotates effortlessly, and remains grippy even when wet. MSRP: $369.99
And on the rod side, Daiwa wants you to know about the new Blackline Inshore Rod Series which has potential use for many species but was designed with striped bass anglers in mind. Blackline Inshore Rods feature premium cork handles, FUJI K- guide train, Daiwa Air Sensor reel seat on spinning models, and Daiwa’s exclusive SVF Super High-Modulus Low Resin Carbon Graphite as well as Braiding X Daiwa technology for greater sensitivity and strength and improves rod velocity during the cast to improve accuracy and distance. There are five spinning rod models from 7- to 7-foot, 10-inches designed to cover all the bases up to 6-ounce lures, and a 7 foot, 6-inch conventional rod that is versatile, but targeted specifically at the fluke and flounder angler. MSRP: $249.99

Zenaq
For monster tuna offshore, Zenaq has two new models they really want you to know about.

First, the Monster Buster is solely designed for capturing tunas over 200kg (440lb). The backbone of the rod is the “DBL Structure,” a new rod making technology originally developed by ZENAQ. Thanks to the DBL Structure, this rod blank boasts impressive heavy load durability, able to withstand the maximum drag from a large reel even at a steep angle of 65 degrees. Its core flexibility allows the rod to be bent effectively with realistic human strength, generating repulsive power as it bends. Even in a fight with monster tunas, the rod blank remains robust, assisting anglers by lifting while enduring the strain. Its length of 7-foot, 7-inches optimizes casting performance, lure control, and performance when facing the heaviest fight. This flexible rod blank can elegantly handle lightweight lures, accurately casting them to the desired spot.
Second, The FOKEETO IKARI 53-J15 is ready to take on ultra-large targets exceeding 150kg. Its action generates lifting power with flexibly bending torque to support anglers in the longest of fights, never yielding initiative to the fish. It’s a super rod that upsets conventional wisdom with stress-free control over jigs of 200g or less, and up to 500g, while boasting monster power. Born through the fusion of IKARI Blank and DBL Structure, the new IKARI Blank DBL dispels preconceived notions of power jigging rods. This ultra-quality rod lets anglers flexibly use all manner of jigs and control the fight with gigantic fish that exceed the limits of other brands.
