Sportfishing Industry and Community Partners Release Policy Recommendations for the Future of Recreational Fishing
The American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the trade association for the sportfishing industry, along with 16 conservation partners released a roadmap for the next Administration and Congress to support the interests of the sportfishing industry and the entire recreational fishing community. THE FUTURE OF SPORTFISHING: Policy Recommendations from the Recreational Fishing Community was a collaborative effort aimed at guiding science-based conservation, growth in trade in commerce, increasing access and education, and advocating for the rights of the American angler.
NOAA Designates New National Marine Sanctuary in California
On Oct. 11, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced the designations of the 4,543 square mile Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary. The Sanctuary will help conserve the area’s diverse range of marine life, celebrate Indigenous peoples’ connections to the region and maintain recreational fishing access. ASA is pleased to see NOAA’s recognition that conservation goals can be achieved in protected areas while providing public access through recreational activities like fishing.
Shark Depredation Continues to Gain Attention
Fishermen around the world have long contended with “depredation” — the partial or complete removal of a hooked fish before it’s landed, by sharks or other marine predators. But in recent years, many U.S. fishermen, especially in the Southeast, have reported an uptick in depredation by sharks.
