New South Atlantic Red Snapper Pilot Programs Provide Fall Season and Recreational Data Improvements

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) and Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) thanked fisheries officials in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina for their continued work to develop state-led red snapper data collection programs following NOAA Fisheries’ issuance of new Exempted Fishing Permits (EFPs).

The permits authorize participating anglers to harvest South Atlantic red snapper in state and federal waters from October 9 through October 22 while the states test approaches to collecting improved recreational catch, effort and discard information. NOAA Fisheries also announced a three-day federal recreational season from October 9 through October 11, providing harvest opportunities for anglers fishing from North Carolina. The pilot programs’ results will help inform future data collection and management decisions.

Putting Fishing and Boating Access on the Map

Whether you’re chasing bass, redfish or salmon this fall, chances are you’ll rely on some form of digital navigation before making the first cast. However, navigating regulations can be trickier than using your fish finder or mapping app. Federal agencies including NOAA, the Department of the Interior, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintain information on fishing and boating access and restrictions in different formats and across different systems.

Fragmented information makes it harder for mapping tools to show anglers and boaters where they can launch, where they can fish and what restrictions apply. Making that information consistently available in usable digital formats would help people plan their trips with greater certainty. Fortunately, a series of bills passed by Congress, like the recently passed MAPOceans Act, are helping to modernize federal mapping data and making it easier for anglers and boaters to confidently get out on the water.
