Ontario, Calf. – Okuma Fishing Tackle introduces the updated Coldwater SS A Low Profile line counter reel is built for serious trolling anglers, whether running lines on the Columbia River or covering water across the Midwest. Featuring a new carbon handle design, this proven reel platform delivers control, reliability, and all-day comfort angler’s demand.
In places like the Columbia River and throughout the Pacific Northwest, salmon fishing is more than a pastime, it’s a way of life. Early mornings, long troll lanes, and days measured by success at the end of the line or back at the dock. That’s exactly who the new Coldwater SS A Low Profile Line Counter Reel was built for.
The Coldwater SS A has long been a trusted platform, known for its precise line counter system and dependable performance. This next generation builds on that reputation with thoughtful upgrades that make a noticeable difference during long hours on the water.
A standout improvement is the new carbon fiber swept handle arm featuring a weighted, counter-balanced design that enhances overall feel and stability during retrieve. Paired with Okuma’s ergonomic Ergo Grip handle knobs, the lightweight carbon fiber construction increases strength while reducing overall weight for a more balanced presentation in hand. The updated knobs provide a secure, comfortable grip in cold, wet conditions while minimizing fatigue from the first drop to the final pass.
Under the hood, the Coldwater SS A is built for power and durability. A rigid diecast aluminum frame and handle side plates provide a solid foundation, while a stainless steel main gear, precision machine cut pinion gear, and stainless steel drive and spool shafts deliver the strength and torque needed for heavy trolling applications. Internally, a multi disc Carbonite drag system provides smooth, consistent pressure, supported by stainless steel ball bearings and a Quick Set anti reverse roller bearing for reliable hooksets and control.
Designed to perform in demanding environments, the reel features corrosion resistant coating throughout, along with a machined aluminum two tone anodized spool for added durability and line management. The aluminum ratcheting drag star allows for precise drag adjustments, while an automatic trip spool engaging mechanism keeps operation intuitive and efficient on the water.
The Coldwater SS continues to deliver the accuracy anglers rely on, with a mechanical line counter system that measures in feet and ensures consistent, repeatable presentations which are critical when targeting suspended walleye or dialing in depth for salmon and steelhead. Okuma’s Clear View Technology reduces fogging in the counter, maintaining visibility in changing conditions throughout the day.
“The Coldwater SS LP Line Counter has already proven itself across some of the most demanding fisheries in the country,” said John Bretza, VP of Product for Okuma Fishing. “What makes this update different is how closely we have worked with guides and core anglers who rely on this reel every day. Their feedback helped refine key details, improving balance, comfort, and performance while staying true to the durability and precision the platform is known for.”
The reel features a 5.4 to 1 gear ratio and is available in both right and left hand retrieve, with DLX models denoting the left hand configuration. Backed by a 1 year limited warranty, the Coldwater SS A is built to perform when it matters most.
