Finding an Edge in Electronics Sales

Retailers are always looking for an edge. Often, that edge comes from marketing or customer service. Even more frequently, it comes from location. However, your supply chain can offer an edge that’s just a sharp—especially when it comes to the competitive world of marine electronics.

This week, FTR sits down with Eddie Winder, president of wholesale electronics distributor Win-Tron Electronics, to take a deeper dive into that world in search of a new competitive edge.

FTR: How does your company culture help independent tackle dealers?

Winder: We know it’s a fight for survival for retailers. We realize that our dealers have a lot of options when it comes to marine electronics and where to purchase. That’s why we are always helping them find that edge. Our mantra here at Win-Tron is “find the opportunities that will enrich our dealers and keep them coming back.

FTR: You got your start selling electronics from some names that are history now. Obviously you’re selling the most modern equipment, but tell us about the old days.

Winder: This is how we staked our claim in the marine wholesale business: In the early days of the business—when electronics became more user-friendly—a lot of companies, like Motorola and Gemtronics, entered the marine electronics market and failed. We started buying up their inventory and selling it at a discount. We became pretty good at this model and were known for being a discount distributor. That was forty years ago when my father, Bill, started the business.

Today, our purchasing department, headed by Andrew Gill, continues to find opportunities that will help keep our dealers in the black. Andrew uses the size and purchasing power that we built up over 40 years to bring in deals that many other distributors wouldn’t be able to pull off.

We make these big deals, some very large purchases, to drive the prices down and then we pass the savings on to our dealers.

Winder spends his days cultivating deals for retailers.

FTR: Can you give us an example of one of those deals?

Winder: Right now one of the best deals is on the remanufactured Lowrance Elite-5 Ti Touch. We purchased nearly 2,000 of these remanufactured units. We are selling them for $229.99 (nearly 50 percent off the original wholesale price). These units are an extraordinary value made even more so because they come loaded with C-MAP Insight Pro charts and carry the full two-year manufacturer’s warranty. They are actually brand new and they were marked as remanufactured to justify the huge markdown. They can be found on our website here.

I strongly suggest that dealers keep an eye on the REMAN section of our website—that’s where these deals will appear. Here’s a link to that address.

FTR: Got any other specials or promos running right now?

Winder: Sure. Another important area of our website for the value-conscious dealer is the Specials/Promotion button. They should be clicking on that at least once a week, so it’s a great bookmark.

Here’s a quick rundown on what one can find there now:

3 Deals from Raymarine

  1. Get a Free Penn Battle Fishing reel with every Raymarine AXIOM Multifunction display ordered.
  2. Get a FREE Remote  Control with every Raymarine Autopilot ordered.
  3. We are offering the T453 thermal camera at $6,812.00.  The original price was $16,796.50.  That’s nearly $10,000 off.

Xantrex – Two FREEBIES

We are offering a FREE remote control panel and temperature sensor with every TrueCharge 2 battery charger ordered.  That’s over $140 worth of product free that the dealer is going to receive.

FREE Navionics Charts

Finally, we are featuring two Humminbird Helix units that come preloaded with FREE Navionics+ chart bundles.  That’s a $200 dollar retail value.

These products are some of the current deals we have going on.  The savvy tackle shop owner would benefit greatly by clicking on our SPECIALS/PROMOTION button once a week.  I also strongly suggest that they keep an eye on our “Remanufactured” page and visit it often.

One easy way for shop owners to keep abreast of our sales and promotions is to sign up for our weekly sales email blast. You can do that there.
