Delving Deep into the Cabela’s Conundrum with The Outdoor Scoreboard

“Grow and celebrate.” Those are the words Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris used to describe his plan for the Cabela’s brand, which announced a $5.5 billion sale to Springfield last week.

Morris reportedly visited Cabela’s headquarters in Sidney, Nebraska earlier this week in an introduction to some of the nearly 20,000 employees that he’ll soon lead as CEO. “He’s just sort of putting a face with a name,” said The Outdoor Scoreboard Podcast co-host Matt Ellis, who helped lead some of Cabela’s recent expansion into southeastern markets primarily dominated by Bass Pro Shops.

To delve deeper into the big box buyout, FTR Digital Editor Joe Sills joined Ellis and co-host David Rose on this week’s episode of The Outdoor Scoreboard. The boys talk about about the impact of the buyout on Cabela’s employees, the rivalry between Springfield and Sidney, the reaction from independent tackle retailers and the impact of Morris’s latest conquest on manufacturers.
