A Classic Repeat With Garmin

To win the Bassmaster Classic one time is no small accomplishment. To win the Classic more than once puts an angler in a rather exclusive club. To win what many refer to as the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” in back-to-back years and thereby defend the title puts Garmin pro Hank Cherry Jr. in truly elite company. This feat has only been accomplished four times (including this go-round) in the 51 years since Bobby Murry took home that first Classic title back in 1971 at Lake Mead.

Following his wire-to-wire win in 2020 on Lake Guntersville, Cherry worked his way up this year’s leaderboard before finally securing a victory on the final day of the tournament with a total weight of 50 pounds, 15 ounces. Over three days of difficult fishing in ever-increasing Texas heat, Garmin was a major factor in Cherry securing the win. “Having confidence in your equipment is a huge part of tournament fishing and I fish so confidently with my Garmin units,” said Cherry. “I believe in my Garmin electronics, and I trust the information they provide. I might get confused, but they never are. And I said it last year, but I’ll say it again – if you do not have LiveScope, you are definitely missing out. It continues to be a huge key to my success.”

But it wasn’t just a one-man show from team Garmin in 2021 as fourteen anglers represented Garmin and Navionics®, a Garmin brand, in this year’s world championship. With a total weight of 49-1, Garmin pro Chris Jones finished the tournament in third, and Garmin pro Brock Mosley weighed in 42 pounds even for fifth place. This follows last year’s impressive sweep of the top three spots at the Classic by Garmin pros with Hank Cherry taking home first, Todd Auten finishing second and Stetson Blaylock taking third.

So, as he begins working towards being the first angler to achieve a Classic 3-Peat and continuing with Garmin’s winning ways, let’s take a deeper dive into the chartplotters, sonar and trolling motors that you’ll find on Hank Cherry Jr’s boat.

Control your Force trolling motor, support your Panoptix LiveScope sonar, synch up compatible Garmin chartplotters on your boat and more with Garmin Echomap Ultra™ chartplotters. Available with either a 10- or 12-inch touchscreen, the sunlight-readable display features preloaded BlueChart® g3 charts or LakeVü g3 maps. The transducer bundle adds CHIRP traditional and Ultra High-Definition scanning sonars so that you can see crisp images of structure and fish in stunning detail. Manage software and chart updates and prep for your marine experience from nearly anywhere with the ActiveCaptain® app.

Earning Garmin its first-ever ‘Best In Show’ award at ICAST 2018, Panoptix LiveScope™ is live, real-time scanning sonar. Anglers often compare it to fishing in a video game as you can see live sonar images of nearby structure, fish and even your lure as it’s retrieved! Use LiveScope Forward to see remarkably clear images of structure and swimming fish around your boat and use LiveScope Down to see directly below your boat. Both modes are available in a single transducer and the view automatically updates on your compatible Garmin chartplotter. With the addition of the Perspective Mode Mount, you can take your Panoptix LiveScope™ real-time scanning sonar to the next level with an overhead sonar view that’s perfect for scouting and fishing in shallow water. Rough water won’t slow you down either as AHRS stabilization keeps your sonar view steady allowing you fish through anything Mother Nature can throw at you.

Since its ‘Best In Show’ win at ICAST 2019, the Garmin Force has proven itself time and time again as the most powerful and efficient trolling motor available, yet it remains extremely quiet both above and below the water. The built-in wireless chartplotter connectivity provides seamless navigation, autopilot and anchor lock capabilities. The super-precise anchor lock holds your boat in the same location with the utmost confidence so you can concentrate on fishing when it matters the most. The Force motor also includes high-wide CHIRP traditional sonar and built-in Ultra High-Definition sonar that provides exceptionally clear images with nearly imperceptible sonar noise interference from the motor. The highly efficient brushless motor operates at either 36 V or 24 V to use less energy, so you can fish longer and never miss a bite. It includes a wireless foot pedal that provides instant control and responsiveness yet feels and steers like a cable-steered pedal, providing anglers with the perfect combination of maneuverability and precision. The handheld remote allows you to navigate with simple point-and-go gesture steering, taking boat control to another level.
